12 Days of Christmas Giving! Would you like to donate?

During this season of giving, we are asking local businesses and organizations to motivate employees and/or customers to donate to the homeless animals at PAWS. This event will start Dec. 12 and conclude Dec. 24. Please see our PAWS Wish List. Monetary gifts are always needed for veterinary care.

Some ideas that you might want to consider: offer customers a discount on purchases if they donate an item to PAWS, set out a collection box for donations, customers enter  a drawing for a give-away if a donation is made, display a giving tree with paper ornaments with PAWS' pictures and donation wishes on the back. Contact us with your ideas and we will post it here on our website and include it in publicity for this event.

Please email your event details to: Julie@pawsonline.org or call Julie at 228-044l or email Michele at pawpaw7@mchsi.com or call 426-6651. Volunteers will be happy to pick up donations. Thank you for thinking of the homeless animals this Holiday season!

Pet Photos with Santa!

The PAWS Humane Society invites the public to bring their pets to Santa's House in Central Park for a holiday photo on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 1-2:30 pm. Children are welcome to be included in the picture, which would make a great Christmas card! All pets must be on a leash or in a carrier. A donation of $5 will go directly toward caring for the homeless animals at PAWS.
A PAWS representative will be available to help assist Santa with the photos.
Photos will be developed at HyVee and can be picked up there when they are finished.

Should be alot of fun!

Please remember the animals during this time of giving

Please remember the homeless animals during this special time of hope and giving. Any donation is greatly appreciated.

We have been blessed this year by so many generous people.

Jeff Powell, an Eagle Scout, and his family have given their time to donate an Isolation Building for new arrivals that are sick. We still need many items for that. If you are interested in helping supply the new building with a fridge, ceramic heater, cupboards, countertop, linoleum, etc. please contact the shelter at 641-257-0766 or email Michele at pawpaw7@mchsi.com.

We also had an anonymous donation to help get our TNR program off the ground. This was extremely generous and most appreciated.

A gal in CA donated a new wheelchair for Andy, our shelter cat who is disabled. He is going through an adjustment period with it now, but it should enable him to get back to what he does best, being the "Protector of all the cats!"

We are so very grateful to those who continue to donate monthly,    whether it is of newspapers, cleaning supplies, toys, etc. We love having the chance to chat with you and thank you for your generosity in person. Without your continued support there would be no PAWS! We need you, the animals need you!

Please consider donating your time as well. We always can use volunteers to help clean or walk dogs. We can also use your support on our Board. We would love to have you attend our monthly meetings. If you need info on any of the above please call the shelter.

If you would like to help but just can not adopt a pet, please consider sponsoring a kennel for just $10 a month. Your name will be placed on the kennel. You have the choice of which kennel to sponsor.

A special thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers who put in many hours a week to make our animals feel special. You are the driving force behind everything we do!

Bless you all during this Holiday Season!

Help us win a $1 million dollar shelter makeover!!!!!

A new program called ZooToo is offering a $1 million shelter makeover. Please go to

http://www.zootoo.com/register/referrer/puppyluv50616

register, and then wait for an email verification. Send it back and you have just earned PAWS 100 points! If you want to go further and add your pets, or make a review, etc. you will receive extra points, and the points all add up for us. The program ends March 31, 2008. We MUST have 25,000 points.
Our zip code is 50616.

After learning about the program yesterday, we quickly registered and were ranked at #435. Today, Nov. 10 we are ranked at #153 with 3189 points!

Please tell all your friends and family to go to the above link and go to Floyd County Humane Society/PAWS Humane Society, register, and wait for the verification. And if you like add your pet(s), etc.

We have waited a very long time for a new building and so have the animals. We are going to give this our best shot but we need YOUR help to do it. There are some bigger shelters in Michigan and Texas that are in the top 4 with alot of points.

***Please*** it only takes a minute to do. Best of all, you can do it while your sitting at home watching TV, etc.

Thank you so much for thinking of the animals!

Sheri Ostman and the Waverly Pet Rescue

PAWS has a very dear friend in the rescue world and her name is Sheri Ostman.  She started the Waverly Pet Rescue one year ago with the help of friends and has saved many lives. She is a true animal lover with a big heart. We would like to showcase her dedicated efforts and rescue.

The Waverly Pet Rescue is NOT A SHELTER. They are a small group of people with a sincere love for animals. The towns they live in do not have shelters so they are helping the homeless pets that have nowhere else to go. All the animals that they have will live in a loving volunteer home until adopted no matter how long that takes. They are very committed to the animals they are helping.

If you would like to adopt one of their pets, please email and Sheri will send an application. They are devoted to the animals in their care and do all they can to make sure they are placed in good homes. They require all prospective adoptions to be subject to application and interviewing before adoption approval.

No dogs will be adopted that will be kept strictly outside. They do not adopt to inside / outside homes for cats. If not already done, all animals must be spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption.

Adoption fees are listed on each profile.

Jeff Powell, needs funds to complete PAWS isolation building for Eagle Scout Project

Eagle Scout Project to benefit PAWS shelter cats

Jeff Powell, needs your help to complete an isolation building/storage building for PAWS Humane Society before winter. The building will be used to house incoming cats that may harbor illnesses and are kept isolated from the rest of the cat population to prevent the spread of any communicable disease. This project will advance Powell to the next level of scouting, which is the Eagle Scout.

Powell has raised some funds by contacting some local businesses. He has raised nearly $800. To complete the project, Powell will need approximately $2000-$3000. A concrete  foundation has already been poured thanks to Kamm Excavating, Allied Construction, and Deboest Concrete. Wubbens Electric will be donating the electrical supplies.

Accounts have been set up for Powell's project at First Security Bank and Trust, and First Citizens National Bank, all of Charles City.

PAWS is very grateful to Jeff and all those who have donated to this project.

If you have any questions, please contact the shelter at 641-257-0766.

Thank you!

ALERT: Grapes/Raisins can be Deadly!

In a recent article in the March 2003 issue of Dog Fancy, and information from the ASPCA's Poison Control Center, has reported cases of dogs dying from kidney failure after injesting grapes or raisins.  One or two grapes are probably not a problem, but every dog reacts differently.  There is not a clear cut reason why our beloved pets are becoming ill.
Early symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhea.  Some progress into lethargy and abdominal pain.  Veterinary care should be sought immediately!

For more information visit www.aspca.org or check out the March 2003 issue of Dog Fancy.
